Histology of the Human Organs

course poster

About this course

By Geoff Meyer

All body organs are made up of the four basic tissues: epithelium, connective tissue, muscle and nervous tissue. In this course, students are presented detailed descriptions of the histological structure and cellular specializations of organs and organ systems of the body accompanied by high resolution images of each tissue and organ. This curriculum in histology is typical of what students study in any medical, dental, and allied health course at colleges and universities throughout the world. This course was originally developed for The University of Western Australia, more information available here.

Dr Geoffrey Meyer BSc (Hons) PhD FRSB is a Professor (Retired) and currently Senior Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Human Sciences, at the University of Western Australia (UWA). He has been teaching anatomy (including neuroanatomy) and histology for over 36 years and has received a number of teaching awards including a UWA Excellence in Innovation in Teaching Award, an International Excellence in Innovation in Teaching, Learning and Technology Award and was a 1999 Australian University Teaching Award Winner. In 2006, he received a UWA Teaching Fellowship and was awarded a prestigious ALTC (Australian Learning and Teaching Council) Fellowship in 2009. He has also been a Project Leader on a number of ALTC Project Grants as well as continuing to be an assessor for both ALTC Project Grants and Australian University Teaching Awards. Geoffrey Meyer continues to teach histology courses at UWA and still maintains a very active role creating innovative histology teaching and learning tools. He also teaches histology and anatomy (including neuroanatomy) to medical, dental and chiropractic students at two other universities in Perth, Western Australia. He is currently an instructor presenting 2 histology courses completely online for University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Extension. He is listed as a “Best Educator” for Histology Courses for Lecturio Medical Education and a member of their Faculty Advisory Board. Geoffrey Meyer is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB) and the Coordinator for Histology on the Federative International Program for Anatomical Terminologies (FIPAT) of the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA). His major work is the award-winning “Meyer’s Histology” via Histology Online, which is an innovative, interactive, online atlas and a platform delivering learning and teaching resources in histology including an extensive virtual microscopy facility.
